West Virginia Games for Health

The School Based Project

Based on the promising findings of the Clinical Study, the school based project was established by the researcher and partners involved to assess the utility and effectiveness of DDR on the health profiles of public school children in West Virginia statewide.

Initially started as a 20 school pilot in the Spring of 2004, the school based project has now completed DDR implementation into all West Virginia middle schools, and is currently placing them into the high schools and elementary schools. Physical education teachers from participating schools are required to come to WVU’s campus for a full-day DDR training (see Training Information for further details). While asked to introduce DDR into the physical education curriculum, the overall goal of the project is to make DDR part of the healthy school environment. Aggregate school data is being used to assess whether DDR does indeed impact the schools in regards to absenteeism, truancy, and various health risks.
